Five ways to boost your immunity in winter

Five ways to boost your immunity in winter

As the winter chill sets in, it’s the season when colds and flu are most rampant. To keep these unwelcome guests at bay, bolstering your immune system becomes a top priority.

Speaking to IndiaToday. In earlier dietitian Anju Mohan at Amrita Hospital, Kochi, said that one’s journey to a strong immune system starts with a healthy diet.

“But keep in mind that your body’s defence mechanisms are not simple. They’re a combination of factors, like your lifestyle, health, age, stress levels, and more. Nutrition’s job here is to make sure your immune system stays strong while also keeping you healthy,” said Anju Mohan.

Here are five effective ways to strengthen your defences against winter’s health challenges.

Embrace a nutrient-rich diet

Your immune system thrives on a balanced diet rich in vitamins and minerals. Incorporate a variety of fruits and vegetables into your meals to ensure you’re getting an ample supply of immune-boosting nutrients like vitamin C, found in citrus fruits, and vitamin E, present in nuts and seeds.

Prioritise physical activity

Regular exercise is more than just a tool for maintaining your waistline. It’s also crucial for keeping your immune system in fighting shape. Moderate activities like walking, yoga, or cycling can boost blood flow and support the production of white blood cells, your body’s disease-fighting agents.

Aim for at least 30 minutes of exercise each day to keep your immune system responsive and robust.

Get plenty of sleep

Never underestimate the power of a good night’s rest. Sleep is the time when your body repairs itself, and this includes your immune system. Adults should aim for seven to eight hours of quality sleep per night.

Stay hydrated

Water is essential for life, and its role in immune function is no exception. Hydration aids in the circulation of immune cells and the elimination of toxins from the body.

Keep stress in check

Chronic stress can suppress your immune response, making you more susceptible to illness. Keeping stress levels low not only benefits your mental health but also helps maintain a vigilant immune system ready to defend against winter’s health hazards.
