PARKERSBURG – Recent health inspections by the Mid-Ohio Valley Health Department can be viewed online at www.movhd.com.

The department covers Wood, Wirt, Calhoun, Pleasants, Ritchie and Roane counties, where hundreds of permitted food establishments operate, including restaurants, bars, grocery stores, schools, hospitals, day care establishments, temporary food stands at special events and food trucks.

These retail entities are governed by the West Virginia Food Establishment Rule, which incorporates, by reference, the majority of the U.S. Food and Drug Administration’s Food Code.

The MOVHD’s Environmental Health staff conducts risk-based inspections annually of all food establishments and responds to complaints with immediate investigations, according to a release from the Health Department.

“The purpose of the inspections are to assure that the food is being handled properly from storage to preparation and serving,” the release said. “Inspectors observe all workers’ food handling practices, assure equipment is working properly, take food temperatures, inspect all refrigeration and storage areas (and) assure water temperatures and correct level and uses of sanitizers.”

If violations are noted, they are discussed with the person in charge and a plan of action is set to correct them, the release said.

Violations are divided in into three categories. Priority violations should be corrected within 72 hours after the inspection, while priority foundation violations should be corrected within 10 calendar days. Core violations need to be corrected by a date and time agreed to or specified by the MOVHD but no later than 90 calendar days after the inspection, the release said.

To access inspection reports, people can visit the Environmental Health tab on the menu bar on the department’s website, www.movhd.com, and scroll to “food safety.” That link will take users to a searchable online database of inspections.

“Our sanitarians work with our local facilities to make sure the Mid-Ohio Valley continues to be safe from food-borne illness,” MOVHD Administrator Eric Walker said. With the inspection reports, “the public can see the process for themselves.”

The release asks people to keep in mind that “any inspection report is a ‘snapshot’ of the day and time of the inspection and is not a picture of the ongoing conditions of that facility. On any given day, a facility could have fewer or more violations than noted in the report.”
